Design

In this section I want to present some design projects. I don't reveal everything, but to convince you of my creativity I also presented some realised projects here. This topic is not only about product design, but for example also about interior design. The realised designs are further on this page. I may not be giving away all my ideas, but it's possible you want to use some in your own commercial projects. I prefer to get involved in this, but I can't avoid you'll do things without me. Please at least inform me (at info at janclaes.be) and I hope you'll mention my name (e.g. based on a concept by Jan Claes).

The computer driven alarm clock

My alarm clock is about two years old, but it still looks the same as the one from 15 years ago. I want an update! I want an alarm clock that I can set through my computer. I want to be able to configure today that I don't want to be woken up at January first. I soon have an early meeting and I want to be able to configure today that it has to wake me up early that day. I want to configure that it doesn't need to wake me up during the Holidays. Why is this still not possible? Therefore I suggest making an alarm clock that can be configured via the computer (e.g. through Bluetooth). And why not synchronise with my agenda? Would you like to realise this with me? Please let me know at info at janclaes.be.

Practical garden furniture

Do you have the same problem that every time you want to eat in the garden there is a lot to move outside? The garden cushions, the table sheet, napkins and all that stuff we get it inside after every party and have to take it outside again. Why can't we just store them in the garden furniture itself? What do you think for example of cubic chairs with lots of storage inside? They have to be water proof of course. Also in the basis of the table lots of stuff can be stored and why did the tables with drawers disappear? Not only garden furniture with storage is missing, but also the storage of the furniture itself is difficult. Where to store extra chairs? Where to store the furniture in the winter? I would make the chairs stackable or to fit under the table. What do you think of a cubic chair with a back support that can be turned down, such that the whole is cubic again and four, six or eight of them fit under the table? In the winter you can fit it all together (with cushions and napkins). Maybe with a fitting cover over it all and you are ready for winter. What do you think? Do you want to realise this with me? Please let me know at info at janclaes.be.

DVD Jukebox

More and more people own an extended DVD collection. More and more people need a closet or multiple closets to store the DVD's. More and more people want to store them more efficient, compact, trendy. That's why I was thinking of a DVD jukebox. Such a device should be able to store a couple (e.g. 100) DVD's. The device also has to be able to play the DVD's and by consequence has to be able to be connected to a television screen (scart or hdmi). I also see lots of extras (if the price can be kept low enough). I would provide the device with great boxes. Preferably with surround effect. The DVD choice has to be either retro (with old fashioned push buttons and letter code) or totally modern (touch screen). The DVD cases can be left behind, but it would be a sin to skip the DVD covers? Therefore I want to show them in the device, possibly digitally. The design should be totally retro (big device with lots of lights) or modern (as small as possible, compatible with the remote control of the television). As you can see: the main idea is good, but there is still a lot to think about. Are you familiar in this sector and do you want to work this out with me? Please let me know at info at janclaes.be.

Bathroom

This is a bathroom a designed for friend couple. The long small space (4 by 2 meters) made it difficult. One of the walls is made of green lightly mirroring glass, that makes the room look wider. To soften the contrast between the low bath (partly in the floor) with the furniture there is a wall with two steps in between (the difference is 40 cm in height). Top storage has mirror fronts. To break down all this mirror affects and to plug in some extra lights, top closets have an extra wood coloured top band. This also makes the coherence with the other units stronger. Cooling, lights and radio are built in the ceiling.

Office

I designed this office with a good friend. Storage, outside sight and few visible cables where priority in this room. Therefore we worked with a big L-shape desk with side table. Behind her is a wall of storage for maximal storage space. A second, smaller, desk is in the corner. The space is running over in the living area, but is separated by blinds which each can be hided out of sight in the ceiling. So each of five panels can be used as 'door' or they can all be hided to make both spaces one room again.

Kitchen

I designed this kitchen with a good friend and her husband. They wanted more light and a better use. The lowered cooker together with the sink in a standalone unit enables them to cook facing the window and kitchen table. The dish washer machine and drawers with plates and stuff are at the side of the kitchen table. The width of the piece is only one meter, but washer, sink and cooker are 60 centimetres, so the drawers are only 40 centimetres. The fridge is at the side because it has to be easily reached from the living room. A smaller piece with sliding doors delivers more work top space. The sliding doors are painted with board paint and are used to freshen up the kitchen with chalk drawings. Most of the drawers have an extra inside drawer. One of the drawers is at full height and has some horizontal bars to store plates vertically. A big sliding door is hiding the washing room where the freezer is standing.

Office

This is my own office room. De desk and the closets are recycled and painted in two colours. I also worked with a wall full of storage. Because there are lots of books and magazines I used open storage. Part of the wall has magnetic paint on it, so it can be used as a magnetic board.

Bathroom

The walls of this bathroom used to be white. The space was far too cool and hungered to some colour.

Bathroom

The same bathroom as before. I found the colours a bit too dark and now they got a fresh green tone.
